What Inspired Me to Start the Pantry Challenge
In 2021, I stumbled upon something that shocked me: expired food buried deep in my cabinets. Growing up, food security was a real concern in our family. We learned never to waste a bite, so seeing perfectly good food go bad left me upset and determined to change.
I tried organizing my pantry with FIFO (First In, First Out), and while it worked for a while, life got busy, and the system fell apart. Then I discovered the Three Rivers Pantry Challenge, a simple concept with big impact: use what you already have in your pantry and kitchen, skipping food shopping for a set period—typically January through March.
Unlike some homesteaders who keep a year’s worth of food on hand, my situation is more modest. That’s the beauty of this challenge—you can tailor it to your needs. It’s been a game-changer for me.
